Video. THE RASMUS PLAYS DEAD LETTERS ON TOUR
The album Dead Letters was a milestone for The Rasmus. They had already released four albums in Finland before the age of 21, and had reached platinum album sales and played sold out arenas in their home country. But their fifth full-length outing, Dead Letters, including the world wide smash hit In The Shadows, propelled The Rasmus to fame and stardom all over the world.
Now, a little more than 15 years after the album was released, The Rasmus will play it from start to finish in a series of concerts in Europe, late September through early November 2019.
The singer, Lauri Ylönen, explains: "Dead Letters is the most important album in the history of The Rasmus. At the time of the release in 2003 we had already existed almost ten years and were on the threshold of adulthood as a band. With self-confidence and curiosity, the fear of the future defined our new style and identity for good. We want to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this album by diving back into that dark world and playing it live from start to finish."
Lauri continues: "We are super excited about this. The album is very theatrical and has strong imagery. We want to bring that visual world to the live performances. Some of the songs will have their first live premier in the Fall of 2019!"
Dead Letters will be re-released on CD and LP in a special Fan Edition on June 6th.

Eero: "Lauri wrote that song in March of this year, we were on tour in Russia for 6 weeks, 6 weeks is a long time to be on tour and constantly traveling, constant in a new city, in a new room. So he was having a feeling of loneliness so to speak, he was alone, far from home, so I think 'Holy Grail' is a song of loneliness, about being different, about standing out from the crowd even when you do not want to stand out.
It is the first song that leads to an album, but, at this moment we feel that the sound of that new album will be more rock than 'Holy Grail' sounds, this is more electronic compared to the classic sound of The Rasmus."
I: "Finally, what are your plans for next year?"
"We are planning a new tour towards the end of next year. In the summer of 2019 we are going to do some festivals, if you want to visit Finland in the summer or be part of the tour, you can start making plans."

And it was very strange, because I immediately thought about how I was going to continue with this, if there was no inspiration. And suddenly the next morning at breakfast, he showed up and said 'I really did not feel any inspiration, but he went to his hotel room and wrote this. And I got 'Holy Grail'', and I replied 'Shit! that's the song.' (laughs). It was very strange, it came out of nothing in the middle of the night, it was beautiful."
I: "Was there an instant connection from Lauri to the band?"
"Yes, it was very strange. It came out of nowhere, we decided to give it to that topic, and then 4 songs of the new album came out."

Lauri: "Yes, I have two children. Everyone in the group has children. And when you have children, you already begin to see things differently. And I really like it. Because with children you somehow lose touch with reality. There is no stress, you feel good. For example, how to play with a puppy (smiles).
Communication with children is very relaxing, brings a lot of joy. And anyway, I really envy how children use their imagination and can be so.. not steamy or something, not stressful. So much fun being a kid! (laughs) I wonder how they see the world, quite differently from you.. So, probably, that's why I sometimes also look at things from this perspective."
I: "What's next?"
"Well, just in this second part I have a little more time and effort to write songs, I am constantly recording something for myself. Well, if I do not run, of course (laughs).
A couple of weeks ago, the new track 'Holy Grail' was released, so yes, we are working on new material. This song is such a song that came out right on tour, quite naturally, without tension. I wrote it in just a couple of hours. It was all relaxed, I thought: let's write it down, let it go, why not. Well, let's move on to the next material. I will try in the future to concentrate more on the album, to be more productive."

03.10, ENG. I: "Anyway, a song is like a Polaroid recording anyway. He can, if he is written personally, only the current state of your life scan."
Lauri: "That's true. Albums often arise in a strange way. Sometimes on a weekend you just sit around, have an idea and decide that you want to create a concept album out of it. I have always had the imagination of a child, which still fascinates me and makes songwriting easier. As you get older, you usually become more realistic and calculated and you lose the joy of many things too fast. On 'Dark Matters' I also wrote songs about this kid, which is exactly what happened. I created a world around a guy who looks back on how he was as a kid, how he behaved at school and was treated by others. How did he grow up, what was his family like? I created a whole world and only then did we write the music around it. In the song 'Wonderman', for example, he creates his superhero alter ego, with which he can flee the harsh reality in order to feel stronger. All these texts and concepts come back to me in the end, because I often felt like a 16-year-old at school."

07.11, ENG. Lauri: "During this European tour we were writing a lot of songs, and it was great and very inspiring to spend so much time with the fans. Even now, when talking to you, I'm close to the show's place and they look at me as they stand in line, thinking: 'Even now, talking to you, I'm close to the place of the show and they look at me as they line up, thinking, 'Why the fuck are you standing in front of the tour bus?' (Laughs). I think these four or five songs sound like old Rasmus. I love that, and it's good to have your feet on the ground. To play in these rock and intimate places as 'la posta'."
I: "Then, I imagine that there is not too much left for the new album."
(Think) "Yes, but every time I promise something it takes time to materialize, although there are already several concepts. What is also important, apart from the songs, is that the group feels good. Every day we talk about the possible covers and videos, so I do not think it's missing that much, but with our band it always takes more time. For example, we are going to release the album in several countries and we will try to coordinate so that all of them premiere at the same time. When it is finished recording, it will be at least six months until it is released. It's pretty ridiculous in a world where everything is moving so fast."

Link, Lauri. "I wrote this song last spring while we were on a long tour of Russia. During the journey, I thought a lot about loneliness. Sometimes I focus special attention on the fans in the audience standing alone in the back, where lights can't reach, and in some way I see myself in them."
THE RASMUS vocalist called such fans 'antiheroes,' explaining: "They are not the loud, out-there fans jumping in the front rows but their role in the band's life doesn't go unnoticed.
"When we meet fans after the show, the mysterious figures at the back rows often turn out to be the most devoted fans — shy and quiet. It's very hard to find the words when you finally get the opportunity to say something. The song is dedicated to all these antiheroes."
