Lauri: "I had the line 'Destination Darkness' on my mind several years before it ended up in this song. This single opened the Hide From The Sun album and we were dealing with great pressure after the big hit album 'Dead Letters'. I guess this was reflecting the feeling of not knowing what the future would bring. The video was made in an old power plant in Berlin."

Lauri: "Hola !! Somos The Rasmus. We are here to make our new video No Fear."

Lauri: "Most of the ideas that we got for the new songs, we got them on the Tour. We had a long Tour, 2 and a half years with the last album and.. we kind of realized that we have to come up with the next album. Was really good to be writing on the Tour in the backstages or in the soundcheck. I had this little notebook where I kept writing all kinds of little lines, and pieces of poems and stuff, and.. Pretty fast after the last shows in Japan in January we went to the studio, like only rehearsed for a month and put all the pieces together."

"Girl, you lived your life like a sleeping swan, your time has come, to go deeper.."

Eero: "In the beginning we were, we were maybe trying to mix very many different kinds of music styles; and now we’re just concentrating on strong melodies. I think that we are more like focused now with our writing and the sound of the band."

Lauri: "Well I think the album title, Hide From The Sun, is kind of based on the feeling that we had after a long Tour, like being in Tour in the world for 2 and a half years and.. basically every night playing a concert. Then many times having an after party, sleeping the all day and waking up when the sun goes down. So basically the whole life, the rhythm of living was turned, kind of turned upside down. So it was hiding from the sun all the time."

Lauri: "No Fear, the lyrics, might sound a little bit depressed; but actually it's a song about a person who is somehow ending the chapter in her life and it's time to move on to the next one. And.. In a way it's like a mental death and a beginning of the new life. So the positive vibes are somehow there as well."

Lauri: "I think videos are quite important; it's a way for the listener to get even deeper in the song. It's sort of like a door. And if you see the images and if the video is backing up the song, then it's perfect."
Eero: "We had a few different scripts from a few different directors and this was the best."
Lauri: "The lyrics fit the video idea quite perfectly, and I like that very much. The video idea came from Joern, the director, and.. we sent him the song and basically the next day he replied and he came up with the story. And it's about a story about this girl, and she is sleepwalking through the whole video and.. whatever she does, whatever situation she gets into, she is always really calm and always making her way to the unknown."

Director: "Sleepwalking is a symbol for unconsciousness; the girl walking through the night is unconscious and not able to reflect her situation. That holds many dangers. The band understands and feels the girl's situation."

Lauri: "I think these butterflies that we have in the video represent the beauty and the fragile things in life, which can be really quickly turned to dust and kind of destroyed. And I think it’s sort of the theme of the album as well, musically and lyrically."

Director: "The colourful butterfly stands for beauty. As a brown and disgusting moth similar to the spider it gets a different connotation. The butterfly is a symbol and the connection between the two worlds. A safe and beautiful world – and real life. The girl dreams of a better world which does not exist."

Director: "While sleepwalking the girl climbs on a rooftop. It should look very dangerous. The problem for the camera is to show the height, because the picture is just two-dimensional. But the girl also falls through a window in the roof. In this case we work with a brave stuntwoman."

Lauri: "Oh, we actually don't meet the girl in the video. She is just in the end, she is walking on the roof and falling down through this glass window. But she never lands the ground. She is supposed to wake up in her own bed. So we have a happy ending."

Lauri: "La maggior parte delle idee che abbiamo avuto per le nuove canzoni, le abbiamo avute durante il Tour. Abbiamo fatto un lungo Tour, 2 anni e mezzo con l'album precedente e.. ci siamo un po' resi conto che dovevamo realizzare l'album successivo. E' stato davvero positivo scrivere durante il Tour nei dietro le quinte e nei soundcheck. Avevo questo piccolo taccuino dove continuavo a scrivere tutti i tipi di piccoli appunti, e pezzi di poemi e cose del genere, e.. Abbastanza rapidamente dopo l'ultimo concerto in Giappone a Gennaio siamo andati nello Studio di registrazione, abbiamo provato solo per un mese e messo insieme tutti i pezzi."

Eero: "Agli inizi stavamo, stavamo forse cercando di mischiare molti diversi tipi di stili musicali; ed ora ci stiamo solo concentrando su melodie forti. Credo siamo più concentrati ora con il nostro modo di scrivere ed il suono del gruppo."
Lauri: "Beh, credo che il titolo dell'album, Hide From the Sun, sia come basato sulla sensazione che abbiamo avuto dopo un lungo Tour, come essere in Tour in giro per il mondo per 2 anni e mezzo e.. in sostanza ogni sera suonavamo un concerto. Poi molte volte organizzavamo una festa dopo, dormendo per tutto il giorno e svegliandoci quando il sole tramontava. Così in sostanza tutta la vita, il ritmo di vita era capovolto. Così ci nascondevamo sempre dal sole."

"Ragazza, il viaggio finale è appena iniziato, il Destino ha scelto il mietitore."

Lauri: "No Fear, il testo può sembrare un po' deprimente; ma in realtà è una canzone che parla di una persona che sta in qualche modo terminando il capitolo nella sua vita ed è ora di andare avanti con il prossimo. E.. In qualche modo è come una morte mentale e l'inizio di una nuova vita. Così ci sono anche delle sensazioni positive."

Lauri: "Credo che i video siano piuttosto importanti; è un modo per chi ascolta per andare ancora più a fondo nella canzone. E' una specie di porta. E se vedi le immagini e se il video segue la canzone, allora è perfetto."

Eero: "Abbiamo ricevuto alcuni diversi tipi di copione da diversi registi e questo era il migliore."
Lauri: "Il testo si adatta al video piuttosto perfettamente, e mi piace molto. L'idea per il video è venuta a Joern, il regista, e.. gli abbiamo inviato la canzone ed in sostanza il giorno dopo ci ha risposto ed ha realizzato la storia. Ed è una storia che parla di questa ragazza, e sta camminando da sonnambula attraverso tutto il video e.. qualunque cosa faccia, in qualunque situazione si trovi, è sempre molto calma e continua sempre a camminare verso l'ignoto."

Regista: "Camminare da sonnambuli è un simbolo per l'inconscio; la ragazza che sta camminando durante la notte non è in sé e non è in grado di riflettere sulla sua situazione. Questo porta molti pericoli. Il gruppo comprende e sente la situazione della ragazza."

Lauri: "Credo che queste farfalle che abbiamo nel video rappresentino le cose belle e fragili della vita, che possono davvero rapidamente trasformarsi in polvere e quasi distruggersi. E credo sia anche una sorta di tema dell'album, sia dal punto di vista dei testi che della musica."

Regista: "La farfalla colorata rappresenta la bellezza. Mentre la falena marrone e disgustosa è simile ad un ragno. Assume diverse connotazioni. La farfalla è un simbolo e la connessione tra i due mondi. Un mondo sicuro e bello - e la vita reale. La ragazza sogna un mondo migliore che non esiste."

Regista: "Mentre cammina da sonnambula la ragazza sale su un tetto. Dovrebbe apparire molto pericoloso. Il problema per la videocamera è di mostrare l'altezza, perché l'immagine è solo bi-dimensionale. Ma la ragazza cade anche attraverso il vetro nel tetto. In questo caso lavoriamo con una stuntwoman coraggiosa."

Lauri: "Oh, in realtà noi non incontriamo la ragazza nel video. E' solo alla fine, sta camminando sul tetto e cadendo giù attraverso queste vetrate. Ma non atterra mai sul terreno. Si presume che si svegli nel suo letto. Così abbiamo una lieta fine."

"The Shot lyric was partly inspired by the Beatles' song 'She's Leaving Home'. My first demo of the tune was only loops and keyboards. Some of that feeling can still be heard in the verses. We shot the video for this single twice. It was raining and storming so hard on the first try, so we had to go back to Fuerteventura three weeks later to shoot it again."

Eero: "Beh, il luogo in cui abbiamo girato è una specie di deserto, nel mezzo di alcune montagne e la sensazione di un luogo vulcanico nel deserto, e cose del genere. Ieri siamo saliti su una di queste montagne ed abbiamo visitato delle grotte nelle montagne, c'erano anche delle persone morte nelle grotte."
Lauri: "Sì, questo posto dev'essere infestato dagli spettri di due streghe che hanno vissuto su quella montagna."

I The Rasmus sono andati alle Isole Canarie per girare il loro nuovo video musicale. Leggi alcuni estratti del loro diario personale, solo in Okej.

6 Febbraio
Oggi siamo atterrati sulla ventosa Fuerteventura. Ognuno nel gruppo era davvero stanco dopo il tour con gli HIM in Russia (i russi sono stati molto gentili e ci hanno mostrato le cose migliori di San Pietroburgo e Mosca).
Quando siamo arrivati in albergo abbiamo avuto un incontro con il gruppo di lavoro del video e la ragazza del trucco ha deciso di tagliare i capelli di Eero. Quando ha finito, abbiamo cenato in anticipo e siamo andati a dormire.

7 Febbraio
Siamo stati svegliati davvero presto. Ci hanno truccato alle sei del mattino !! Era scuro e freddo quando siamo usciti dal furgone per dirigerci verso il luogo in cui dovevamo girare il video.
Una volta arrivati là abbiamo soltanto potuto aspettare che il tempo migliorasse. Poi ha iniziato a piovere. Così ci siamo seduti e riscaldati bevendo del té e del caffé ed abbiamo soltanto aspettato ed aspettato. Sinceramente abbiamo iniziato ad irritarci a causa della situazione in generale. Una volta che ha smesso di piovere, però le cose erano accadute davvero velocemente, avevamo perso molto tempo. Ma tutti erano un po' preoccupati. Era ancora abbastanza scuro, delle nuvole cariche di pioggia ricoprivano le cime delle montagne ed era molto diverso dal sole sempre presente che ci saremmo aspettati.
E naturalmente non appena abbiamo iniziato a girare un'enorme nuvola gialla è arrivata nel deserto. Nei secondi successivi siamo stati seppelliti da una tempesta di sabbia !! Le tende volavano via. Non vedevamo nulla. L'enorme gru della telecamera dondolava violentemente nel forte vento.
(1) c'è una foto della gru, e le persone del gruppo di lavoro e Lauri e Pauli e metà di Aki. Era impossibile lavorare e tutto il gruppo è ritornato di nuovo in albergo. Non abbiamo fatto nulla !! E' finita con noi che abbiamo dovuto lasciare l'isola e ritornare due settimane dopo.
Fare un video musicale non è gratis. Ed è stato sicuramente il taglio di capelli più costoso di Eero - di sempre !!

8 Febbraio
Faremo ancora dei concerti con gli HIM ed oggi siamo atterrati in Germania.

9 Febbraio - 19 Febbraio
Abbiamo fatto 10 concerti con gli HIM ed i Negative. Fantatici !! Abbiamo avuto sempre un pubblico fantastico, probabilmente c'erano tra le 4000-9000 persone per ogni concerto. Tutto completamente esaurito !!
Abbiamo avuto davvero un grande successo.

(2) Foto di Lauri che canta ed è molto divertente esibirsi con gli HIM.
Anche ai loro fan è piaciuto il nostro show, cosa che ha reso tutto ancora migliore !!

20 Febbraio
Abbiamo fatto il nostro ultimo concerto prima di volare di nuovo a Fuerteventura. Il viaggio è andato bene, tranne per il fatto che la chitarra di Pauli si era persa quando siamo arrivati. Possiamo soltanto sperare che venga ritrovata prima dell'inizio delle riprese. Siamo davvero, davvero stanchi, di nuovo. Fortunatamente abbiamo il tempo di rilassarci un po' prima che cominci tutto.

21 Febbraio
Abbiamo del tempo libero !! Abbiamo dormito a lungo ed abbiamo fatto
una passeggiata sul litorale del villaggio Corralejo.
(3) Una foto dei ragazzi mentre camminano, dove alloggiamo. Il tempo è migliore ora, ma stiamo ancora aspettando la chitarra di Pauli.

Domani faremo le riprese nel deserto, vicino al monte Tindaya. Così oggi siamo andati là, insieme al regista Sandra, per salire sulle montagne.
(4) Foto di Lauri ed Aki sulle montagne. E' un luogo sacro e ci sono molte storie sugli spiriti che sono là. Per essere al sicuro abbiamo fatto dei rituali sacrificali sulla cima della montagna e pregato il Dio del tempo per il sole. Ci è sembrata una buona idea se pensiamo al nostro primo viaggio qui.

22 Febbraio
Siamo stati svegliati di nuovo davvero davvero presto !! Eravamo di buon umore mentre andavamo in auto verso il luogo delle riprese. Non appena il sole è iniziato a sorgere all'orizzonte, abbiamo iniziato a lavorare.
Abbiamo filmato, in modo continuo, per tutto il giorno con diverse lenti per le telecamere, inquadrature, velocità e altre cose. Abbiamo persino girato delle scene dirette all'indietro, così Lauri ha dovuto imparare i testi al contrario.
(5) Foto di un appunto con delle strane scritture per ottenere una sincronizzazione delle labbra corretta. Suonava davvero divertente !!

Abbiamo anche usato la gigantesca gru per delle riprese davvero belle.
E la telecamera che faceva le riprese è stata montata su un'auto che si dirigeva verso di noi ad alta velocità.

(6) Una foto di Lauri nel deserto con la telecamera ed il gruppo di lavoro di fronte a lui. Lauri si è anche sacrificato ed alla fine la scena è proseguita con una caduta all'indietro mentre stava cantando.

(7) Una foto di Lauri che cade su un materasso. Si fa tutto per l'arte,
o per i fan ?!?

Tutta la squadra, 25 persone, ha lavorato senza sosta per tutto il giorno e nel momento in cui non filmavamo facevamo delle interviste e delle foto per diverse riviste. Siamo stati all'aria aperta per tutto il giorno con il sole sempre presente (meglio della pioggia) e ci siamo presi tutti una bella scottatura, nonostante la crema per il sole. Nel mezzo di tutto questo una piccola capretta selvatica (!) improvvisamente ha iniziato a gironzolare per il set.

Il giorno è finito con noi che giravamo davanti ad uno sfondo blu (un grande gigantesco schermo blu che rende più facile mettere qualsiasi immagine tu voglia sullo sfondo) e grandi specchi. Sarà davvero eccitante vedere quali riprese saranno messe nel video finale.

Finalmente l'abbiamo terminato !! Così siamo andati in un ristorante locale a mangiare i papas arrugadas (delle patate rugose davvero buone) con il mojo (salsa di pomodoro) ed abbiamo festeggiato il fatto che, speriamo, abbiamo fatto un bel video !!
Ora guardando indietro siamo tutti d'accordo che è stato un video davvero divertente, ma la prossima volta preferiremmo piuttosto fare le riprese in uno studio. Molto lontano dalla pioggia, dal sole, dalle tempeste di sabbia e dalle caprette selvatiche... Ci vediamo la prossima volta !!

"Hello everyone,
We are very excited about the video, as it shows some real live energy of the band! There arealso some great clips of our fans having a good time in the audience. The video footage was shot mostly by me and some friends on different stages in in South Africa, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Japan, and New York.

When I was in Argentina, I needed to buy more Super8 cartridges, so I looked up the Internet for the film distributor. I found one phone number and address, and called them and took a cab there. It turns out that this address is in an apartment building, 4th floor and there is this one guy, who is running his own small production company and they are distributing Super8s in Argentina. We got to talk and I tell this guy to come to our show with his girlfriend, and actually he turned out to shoot our concert on my camera... Great fun! And in the town almost no one spoke English so the whole thing was kind of an absurd lucky strike...

In Tokyo Japan, I received a camera (a Nikon r25 Super8mm) from this guy who was selling it on eBay. I had bought 2 cartridges of film earlier and decided to hit the riverside where I saw some homeless people the day before and their small "cabins" and tents. The whole place was kind of exciting, weird, sad and touching. These people were cooking their noodles on the pavement by the riverside, watching TV with stolen electricity, spending their time chatting and drinking away... someone had their laundry all organized and neat outside their tent, which was built out of canvas and chipboard...

In South Africa we got to visit some townships. We also went to Nelson Mandela's home and took some footage of some local kids... the life is quite different there... imagine a small hut, built out of metal plates, the floor is just the earth, the size is 2 meters x 2 meters, it's 35 Celsius degrees in the sun, you try to take care of 3 kids and cook a meal... just witnessing all this is quite heavy...
we played 3 shows there on a touring festival, Metallica was the headliner and we got to meet Lars U. and James H.!

In Mexico we had this legendary helicopter ride, leaving from downtown Mexico City and ending up next to a parking lot of Aztecas Stadium somewhere in the infinite suburbs of the city. We played 3 songs there in front of 80 500 people, one crazy feeling to walk on the stage and all the adrenaline...

There is also some footage of New York in the video, I shot it in 1998 when I was there on a holiday trip, the Twin Towers were obviously still there and New York was still exciting and a feel-good...

The feeling of Super8 material is so different to anything else... somehow the light just behaves different compared to video and to wider films, there's something very emotional and magical about super8 film.

Siamo molto eccitati dal video, perché mostra l'energia del gruppo dal vivo !! Ci sono anche filmati dei nostri fan che si divertono tra il pubblico. Le riprese del video sono state girate in gran parte da me e da alcuni amici su diversi palchi in Sud Africa, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Messico, Giappone e New York.

Quando ero in Argentina, ho dovuto comprare altre cartucce Super8, così ho guardato su Internet per trovare un distributore di pellicole. Ho trovato un numero telefonico e un indirizzo, li ho chiamati ed ho preso un taxi per andare lì. Sì è scoperto che questo indirizzo è in un edificio con degli appartamenti, al 4° piano e c'è un solo ragazzo che dirige una piccola società di produzione e stanno distribuendo i Super8 in Argentina. Abbiamo chiacchierato ed ho detto a questo ragazzo di venire al nostro concerto con la sua fidanzata, ed effettivamente è riuscito a filmare il nostro concerto con la mia videocamera... Un grande divertimento !! E in città quasi nessuno parlava inglese così tutta la faccenda è stato un incredibile colpo di fortuna...

A Tokyo, in Giappone, ho ricevuto una videocamera (una Nikon r25 Super8mm) da questo ragazzo che la vendeva su eBay. Avevo comprato in precedenza due cartucce di pellicola e ho deciso di filmare la riva del fiume dove avevo visto dei senzatetto il giorno prima e le loro piccole "cabine" e tende. Tutto il luogo era in un certo qual modo eccitante, strano, triste e toccante. Queste persone stavano cucinando le loro tagliatelle sul marciapiede accanto alla riva del fiume, guardando la TV con l'elettricità rubata, passando il loro tempo a chiacchierare ed a bere... qualcuno aveva il bucato tutto organizzato e pulito fuori la tenda, che era fatta di tela e legno ricostruito...

In Sud Africa siamo andati a visitare alcune contee. Siamo anche andati nella casa di Nelson Mandela ed ho fatto delle riprese di alcuni bambini del luogo... la vita è piuttosto diversa là, immaginate una piccola capanna, costruita con lamiere di metallo, il pavimento è soltanto la terra, la misura è di 2 metri per due metri, ci sono 35 gradi con il sole, cerchi di prenderti cura di 3 bambini e di cucinare un pranzo... soltanto osservare tutto questo è abbastanza duro...
Abbiamo fatto 3 concerti là in un festival durante il Tour, i Metallica erano il gruppo principale ed abbiamo incontrato Lars Ulrich e James Hetfield !! (Pics)

In Messico abbiamo fatto questo leggendario viaggio in elicottero, partendo dalla periferia di Messico City ed arrivando accanto ad un parcheggio dello Stadio Azteca che si trova da qualche parte nell'infinita periferia della città. Abbiamo suonato tre canzoni là di fronte a 80 500 persone, una sensazione folle salire sul palco e tutta l'adrenalina...

Ci sono anche dei filmati di New York nel video, li ho filmati nel 1998 quando sono stato lì in vacanza, le Twin Towers erano ovviamente ancora lì ed era ancora eccitante ed una bella sensazione...

Le sensazioni del materiale Super8 sono così diverse da qualsiasi altra cosa... in qualche modo la luce si comporta in modo diverso paragonata ad un video ed a pellicole più grandi, c'è qualcosa di molto emozionante e magico in una pellicola Super8.
