The last album Dead Letters sold 1,5 million copies, but how can you ever do that again ? On the new album Hide From The Sun the finnish band The Rasmus tries to please all the fans with a mixture of something hard and softer stuff.

After 9 years struggeling of the finnish clubs The Rasmus got a big break-through 2003 with Dead Letters and the album sold a lot and they also became the
Best Nordic sellers and the hopes for the new album is therfor very high, but the critics have also become worse. In Sweden they say The Rasmus is the worst band in the world and that they are super jerks (Nooooooooo Sweden loves you guys and you know that some people are idiots but u rock

)

Still the guys seems kinda laid back of the bad wiew of the band.
"We need to have a kick in the ass so we can prove for everyone that we kick ass," Aki says. (haha don't you love them ahh Aki somehow this words made me die of laughing)

But how does it feels to always get bad rewiews then ?
"I try not to think about it. I am normally a thinker and can get sad very easily, but I don't want it to be like that. We try to ignore that kind of things and after all it's just one person and we have fans that loves us," the singer says.

(and one more word I can't explain in english sorry) He is also the one who write the texts and he also takes care of the most of the interwiews.
"We have pretty good self confidence and even too much sometimes and we still feels like this is just the beginning. For us every album is a new start," Lauri says.

Hide From The Sun has some differences than Dead Letters even though they still keep the same producers in the swedish guys Micke Nord Andersson and Martin Hanssen. It's rockier and harder than Dead Letters and they do know about it even though Ylönen thinks it also has another side.
"We wanted to find a mixture between the beautyness and the hardness.
Some of the sounds are harder, but we still have for example Sail Away that is
kinda soft so I think it's a nice mixture. Its bending the limits by being both
harder and softer."

The lyrics are often about leaving someone you love or dying and Lauri says
it's what they've felt as a band these hectic years.
"I mean we are out touring a lot. Last year we were away from Finland 250 days and there are the people we still love the most so it feels like we drift away from that safe world. When I sing about the death it's not the real death I sing about, but some new beginnings so it definitely has some positives vibes even if
it's dark," he says.
They were 16 when they begun and you maybe think the hectic life of touring would make them arguing a lot, but they claim that they more likely has grown even tighter and the chemistry between them still is very good, both Aki and Lauri means.
"We are going to a lot of new places. Soon we'll go to India for example and we meet new cultures almost everyday. This has made us appreciate Finland more and people are so honest and nice back home. Maybe more shy and reserved, but once you've broke the shield you'll have a friend for life. That is what we are too. We have days when we don't wanna talk at all too. Then they believe we are arrogant bastards, but we actually prefer to be quiet sometimes."

Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down and Guns 'n Roses (Aki) Weezer and Mew are amazing too and I actually bought 11 cds with

The finnish music scene growing bigger.
"Right now it feels like the rest of the world looks after new Finnish bands coming out. A couple of years ago Sweden was the most important music country, but this time it feels like Finland has more."( Aki)

About the other big finnish band HIM
We release our album pretty much in the same time and we all come from Finland and I've done a duet with Ville. Then there is also the symbol of the butterfly
we both use. HIM's new single is called Wings Of A Butterfly.

L'ultimo album Dead Letters ha venduto 1 milione e mezzo di copie, ma come puoi mai farlo di nuovo ? Sul nuovo album Hide From The Sun il gruppo finlandese dei The Rasmus cerca di soddisfare tutti i fans con un miscuglio di qualcosa di duro e di qualcosa di più dolce.

Dopo 9 anni passati a divincolarsi tra i locali finlandesi i The Rasmus hanno ottenuto la grande affermazione nel 2003 con Dead Letters. L'album ha venduto molto e sono anche diventati gli artisti nordici con le migliori vendite e le aspettative per il nuovo album sono perciò molto alte, ma i critici sono anche diventati più severi. In Svezia dicono che i The Rasmus sono il peggior gruppo
al mondo e che sono dei super bastardi (Nooooooooo la Svezia vi ama ragazzi e sapete che alcune persone sono degli idioti ma voi siete forti !!

Persino i ragazzi sembrano incapaci di rispondere alle cattive recenzioni
che riceve il gruppo.
"Abbiamo bisogno di ricevere calci nel sedere così possiamo provare a tutti che noi diamo calci nel sedere," dice Aki. (ahaha non li amate ?? ahh Aki. In qualche modo queste parole mi hanno fatto morire dalle risate.)

Ma allora come ci si sente a ricevere sempre delle cattive recenzioni ?
"Cerco di non pensarci. Di solito sono una persona che riflette e che si rattrista molto facilmente, ma non voglio che sia così. Cerchiamo di ignorare questo tipo di cose e dopo tutto è solo una persona e noi abbiamo molti fan che ci amano," dice il cantante (Dannatamente giusto Lauri, noi ti amiamo)
Lauri è il centro dell'attenzione. Il sorriso dolce,

i capelli pazzi

ed il berretto tirato giù ci descrivono la sua sensibilità. E' anche colui che scrive i testi e che si occupa della maggior parte delle interviste.
"Abbiamo abbastanza fiducia in noi stessi, a volte persino troppo e ci sentiamo ancora come se fossimo agli inizi. Per noi ogni album è un nuovo inizio." dice Lauri.

Hide From The Sun presenta qualche differenza rispetto a Dead Letters sebbene abbiano mantenuto gli stessi produttori che sono i ragazzi svedesi Micke Nord Andersson and Martin Hansen. E' più Rock e più duro di Dead Letters e loro lo sanno bene anche se Ylönen crede ci sia anche un altro aspetto.
"Volevamo trovare un miscuglio tra la bellezza e la durezza. Alcuni dei suoni sono più duri, ma abbiamo anche per esempio Sail Away che è piuttosto dolce così è un bel miscuglio. Tende ad andare verso i limiti essendo sia più duro che più dolce."

I testi parlano spesso di lasciare qualcuno che ami o della morte e Lauri ci dice che è quello che hanno provato nel gruppo in questi anni caotici.
"Volevo dire che siamo in giro per molto tempo. L'anno scorso siamo stati lontano dalla Finlandia per 250 giorni e lì ci sono ancora persone che amiamo molto così abbiamo la sensazione di allontanarci da quel mondo sicuro. Quando canto della morte non è della morte reale di cui canto, ma come un nuovo inizio così ha sicuramente delle vibrazioni positive anche se è oscuro," dice.

Avevano 16 anni quando hanno iniziato e forse potreste pensare che questa vita sfrenata facendo tour li ha fatti litigare fra di loro molte volte, ma loro affermano che i loro legami sono diventati persino più stretti e l'affinità che c'è fra di loro è ancora molto buona, ci fanno capire sia Aki che Lauri.

"Siamo andati in molti nuovi posti. Presto andremo in India per esempio ed abbiamo incontrato nuove culture quasi ogni giorno. Questo ci ha fatto apprezzare di più la Finlandia e le persone sono così oneste e gentili nel nostro paese. Forse sono più timidi e riservati, ma una volta che hai rotto il ghiaccio hai un amico per la vita. Questo è ciò che siamo anche noi. Abbiamo anche giorni in cui non vogliamo proprio parlare. Allora ci credono degli arroganti e bastardi,
ma in realtà preferiamo a volte rimanere in silenzio."
Fine.
Effettivamente quest'intervista mi è piaciuta molto. E' stata fatta da un giornalista dalla mente aperta, davvero buona.

I The Rasmus sui loro gruppi preferiti

"Weezer e Mew sono anche stupefacenti ed addirittura ho comprato 11 CD
degli Iron Maiden. Non ne avevo uno di loro prima." (Lauri)

La scena musicale finlandese sta diventando più grande.
"Adesso sembra che il resto del mondo si accorga delle nuove band finlandesi che vengono fuori. Un paio di anni fa era la Svezia il paese più importante dal punto di vista musicale, ma questa volta sembra che la Finlandia abbia qualcosa in più." (Aki)

Riguardo l'altra grande band finlandese, gli HIM.
"Abbiamo fatto uscire il nostro album quasi in contemporanea, tutti veniamo dalla Finlandia ed io ho fatto un duetto con Ville. Poi c'è anche il simbolo della farfalla che entrambi usiamo. Il nuovo singolo degli HIM si chiama Wings Of A Butterfly."

Anke in olanda ci sono sto bici... in pratica x frenare si pedala all'indietro...

The Rasmus return to the UK, and for frontman Lauri Ylönen, it's a chance
to play decent size venuesand drink good beer. And he's looking forward
to having "Spotted".

K: "Looking forward to touring over here again ?"
Lauri: "Yes, we've played a lot of those venues before, so it will be nice to come back to them. In Finland you don't really get the oppurtunity to play those kinds of shows because there aren't any venues like that. It's either really big or a small club, so I like to be able to play English venues where you're still close to the audience and you get that vibe, but you can still put on a big show."

K: "Do you have any special pre-show ritual ? Pissing in a cup perhaps ?"
Lauri: "I always like to get a good look at the stage so I know how big it is. Because one gig we did, I didn't know how big the stage was and I fell right off it. Another time we lost our guitar player under the stage. It was total Spinal Tap, he got lost and ended up below the stage. That kind of stuff always happens, so it's important to be prepared."

K: "Do you like to sample the local specialities when on tour ?"
Lauri: "Yeah, I like to go out and see stuff as much as I can, photography and architecture is something I really like to see. And in Austria there's a museum of torture, which looks really cool.

England is cool, you have Stonehenge.
I like English beer, that's really nice."

K: "What about the English food ?"
Lauri: "I want to try 'Spotted'."

K: "That sounds interesting !! Do I like English food in general ?"
Lauri: "No, it mostly tastes like shit !! Ha ha !!"

I The Rasmus ritornano nel Regno Unito e per il leader Lauri Ylönen è la possibilità di suonare in un luogo abbastanza grande e di bere una bella birra.
E non vede l'ora di provare lo "Spotted". (cibo in scatola inglese)

K: "Non vedi l'ora di tornare in tour qui di nuovo ??"
Lauri: "Sì, abbiamo suonato in molti di questi luoghi prima, così sarà bello ritornarci. In Finlandia non hai davvero l'opportunità di suonare in questi tipi di spettacoli perché non ci sono posti così. I locali o sono troppo grandi o sono troppo piccoli, così mi piace suonare nei locali inglesi dove sei ancora vicino al pubblico e ne ricevi le vibrazioni, ma puoi anche realizzare dei grandi spettacoli."

K: "Avete qualche rituale speciale che fate prima dello spettacolo ?
Forse fare pipì in una tazza ?"
Lauri: "Mi piace sempre dare un'occhiata al palco così so quant'è grande. Perché in uno spettacolo che abbiamo fatto non sapevo quant'era grande il palco e son caduto fuori da esso. Un'altra volta abbiamo perso il nostro chitarrista sotto al palco. Aveva un foro sul retro, si è perso ed è finito sotto al palco.

Questo tipo di cose accadono sempre, così è importante essere preparati."

K: "Ti piace provare le specialità locali quando siete in tour ?"
Lauri: "Sì, mi piace uscire e vedere più cose possibili, la fotografia e l'architettura sono qualcosa che mi piace davvero vedere. Ed in Austria c'è un museo delle torture, che è davvero bello.

l'Inghilterra è bella, avete Stonehenge.

K: "Che ne pensi del cibo inglese ?"

Lauri: "It has a Rasmus sound and reminds a bit of In The Shadows. It's about love and to do things for the one you love."

Night After Night (Out Of the Shadows)
Lauri: "The second part of In The Shadows. By music it's a lot more aggressive, but around the time of In The Shadows there was tackyer (me: I'm not sure of the right word, but I think it's something like tacky, which I wrote) and gloomier times (me: I didn't find the right word for this 'times', because the finnish word was slang). Now had a positive feeling and wanted to carry on with this story. In In The Shadows lots of questions were asked and help was asked. Answers came and the story continues in this song."

No Fear
Lauri: "One of the last songs we did. It's very 80ish influenced. It's a positive song even though it might not sound like it first."
Eero: "Pauli already had a demo to it."

Lucifer's Angel
Lauri: "It's a very aggressive sound about the past when there was some people who tried to help other people with different stuff. They became abused for being witches and evil and therefore they got killed. Things like that might still happen today even if we do know today they are just trying to help."

Last Generation
Lauri: "It's a good melody, so we tried to build it up from there."

Dead Promises
Lauri: Apocalyptica visits in this. An old song, where we wanted cellos. The riff is aggressive and eveything else is beautiful and delicate ([me:] /tender).
Eero: "This has been like those yelling songs at first."

Immortal
Lauri: "The first song we recorded. We made this a year before the other songs. It was really a direction-showing song for about the whole album (me: I know that this sentence was bad english but it's the best how I could translate it..someone please correct if you know better). We started from a live situation to make this song so it has arisen from jamming in soundchecks. A kinky (me: or something like that) song which has still something very beautiful."
Aki: "Lots of good memories are associated to this. We were on tour for six weeks without even a drop of alcohol and the mood was brilliant."

Lauri: "I sat on the floor and played some guitar

to the other guys and
they liked it so we decided to do a simple song. A song you could sing by the fire.
It was obvious ever from the beginning what it would be like."

Lauri: "Ha un suono molto aggressivo e parla del passato quando c'erano alcune persone che cercavano di aiutarne altre con metodi diversi. Furono trattate male perché erano delle streghe e dei diavoli e per questo furono uccise. Cose come queste potrebbero ancora accadere oggi anche se ora sappiamo che loro stavano solo cercando di aiutare."

Last Generation
Lauri: "E' una bella melodia, abbiamo cercato di costruire qualcosa partendo
da quella."

Dead Promises
Lauri: "C'è la visita degli Apocalyptica in questa canzone. Una vecchia canzone, dove volevamo i violoncelli. Il riff è aggressivo e tutto il resto è bellissimo e tenero.
Eero: "Questa avrebbe dovuto essere come quelle canzoni che si strillano all'inizio."

Immortal
Lauri: "La prima canzone che abbiamo registrato. Abbiamo fatto questa un anno prima delle altre canzoni. E’ stata una canzone che ha dato davvero la direzione per l’intero album. Siamo partiti facendo questa canzone in una situazione live così è cresciuta con le prove durante il soundcheck. Una canzone complessa che ha anche qualcosa di molto bello.
Aki: "Molti bei ricordi sono associati ad essa. Eravamo in tour da sei settimane senza nemmeno una goccia di alcool e lo stato d'animo era magnifico."

Lauri: "Mi sono seduto sul pavimento ed ho suonato un po' la chitarra

agli altri ragazzi ed a loro è piaciuta molto così abbiamo deciso di fare una canzone semplice. Una canzone che potresti cantare accanto ad un fuoco. Era ovvio sin dall'inizio come sarebbe venuta."
