Little grammar point, it should be 'a european...' because 'an' is for when the following word begins with a vowel sound... probably you learned 'An apple, an orange, an umbrella - a book, a carrot, a dog'
This is correct, but for the sound not for the fact that there is a vowel or a consonant after the indefinite article.
examples: a university, a union, a euphemism (The sound is 'Y' )
This also applies when we use acronyms that begin with the members of the third group of letters (F,L,M,N,S,X)
examples: an MTV video, an FBI agent, an x-ray, an NBC programme. When the consonant is 'H' you have to consider if the 'H' is silent or not, examples: an hour, an honour, but - a hotel, a history lesson, a headache.
